Company Secretary as a Career

Company Secretary is a prestigious and financially rewarding career which also brings about a high level of job satisfaction.

By virtue of their combined knowledge of multiple fields of law, finance, management and corporate governance, a Company Secretary becomes the fundamental link between the company and its:

  • Board of Directors
  • Shareholders
  • Government and other agencies

A Company Secretary is:

  • An in-house legal expert; a compliance officer of the Company.
  • An expert in corporate laws, securities laws and capital market, and corporate governance
  • Chief advisor to the Board of Directors on best practices in corporate governance
  • Responsible for all regulatory compliances of company
  • A corporate planner and strategic manager

The qualification of a Company Secretary can be obtained by passing the CS exams organised by The Institute of Company Secretaries of India (ICSI). The ICSI membership is crucial to getting a corporate as well as state and government jobs.

How to become a Company Secretary after Class XII

The student who wishes to pursue CS as a career after 10+2 has to undergo 3 stages to become a Company Secretary. These courses are:

  • Foundation Programme
  • Executive Programme
  • Professional Programme

Besides the courses, a CS aspirant has to undertake Practical Training for the duration of 15 months. All CS aspirants may initiate the training after successfully completing the Executive Programme.

How to become a Company Secretary after Graduation

The student who wishes to pursue CS as a career after graduation has to undergo 2 stages to become a Company Secretary. These courses are:

  • Executive Programme
  • Professional Programme

Besides the courses, a CS aspirant has to undertake Practical Training for the duration of 15 months.
All CS aspirants may initiate the training after successfully completing the Executive Programme.

How to register for CS Programs

Foundation Programme
The CS Foundation Programme is of eight months duration. It can be pursued by all students who have passed Class XII irrespective of whether their chosen stream was Arts, Science or Commerce.

Executive Programme
The CS Executive Programme can be pursued by a graduate of all streams except Fine Arts.

Professional Programme
The CS Professional Programme can be pursued only after clearing the CS Executive Programme.


Training
An aspirant has to undertake 15 months of Management Training in companies sponsored by ICSI or under the guidance of a Company Secretary in Practice after passing the Executive or Professional Programme.
After qualifying Professional Examination and on successful completion of training, a candidate is admitted as an Associate Member of the ICSI and can use the letters ACS after their name i.e. Associate Company Secretary.

Admission to CS Courses: Important Dates

Admission to the CS Course is open throughout the year. Examinations are held twice a year in June & December.

Cut off dates for admission to CS course:

For Foundation Programme 31st March for December Exam in the same year
30th September for June Exam next year
For Executive Programme 28th February for December Exam in the same year
31st August for June Exam next year
