National Panchayati Raj Day
What's the NEWS
- The Prime Minister visited Palli Gram Panchayat under Samba District in Jammu and Kashmir to participate in the celebration of National Panchayati Raj Day
- The Prime Minster launched the Amrit Sarovar initiative.
- The Prime Minister handed over SVAMITVA cards to beneficiaries.
- The Prime Minister inaugurated a 500 KW solar power plant at Palli, which will make it the country's first Panchayat to become carbon neutral.
- All houses of Palli Gram Panchayat getting solar power is a perfect example of Gram Urja Swaraj
- Palli Gram Panchayat is moving towards becoming the first Carbon Neutral Panchayat in the country.
- For the first time, elections to the three-tier Panchayati Raj system - Gram Panchayat, Panchayat Samiti (Block Development Council) and District Development Council (DDC) have been held in Jammu and Kashmir.
- Prime Minister attended the Master Deenanath Mangeshkar Awards Ceremony in Mumbai, where he will also receive the 1st Lata Deenanath Mangeshkar Award.
- Prime Minister distributed property cards to beneficiaries under the SVAMITVA (Survey of Villages and Mapping with Improvised Technology in Village Areas) Scheme
- Amrit Sarovar
- With a view to ensure rejuvenation of water bodies, the Prime Minister a launched a new initiative named Amrit Sarovar.
- It is aimed at developing and rejuvenating 75 water bodies in each district of the country as a part of celebration of Azadi ka Amrit Mahotsav.
- The Prime Minister said that 75 Sarovars will come up in every district by 15 August in 2023.
- These Sarovars should be lined with trees named after the martyrs and freedom fighters.
- Banihal Qazigund Road Tunnel
- Prime Minister inaugurated the Banihal Qazigund Road Tunnel, built at a cost of over Rs 3100 crore.
- The 8.45 Km long tunnel would reduce the road distance between Banihal and Qazigund by 16 km, and reduce journey time by around one and a half hour.
- It is a twin tube tunnel - one for each direction of travel - with the twin tubes being interconnected by a cross passage every 500m, for maintenance and emergency evacuation.
- The tunnel would help establish an all-weather connection between Jammu and Kashmir, and bring the two regions closer.
- The Prime Minister also laid the foundation stone of Ratle and Kwar Hydroelectric projects.
- The 850 MW Ratle Hydroelectric Project will be constructed on Chenab river in Kishtwar District at a cost of around Rs 5300 crore.
- The 540 MW Kwar Hydroelectric Project will also be built on Chenab river in Kishtwar District at a cost of over Rs. 4500 crore.
- Prime Minister will attend the Master Deenanath Mangeshkar Awards Ceremony in Mumbai On this occasion, Prime Minister will be conferred 1st Lata Deenanath Mangeshkar Award.
- This award, which has been instituted in memory of Bharat Ratna Lata Mangeshkar, will be given every year exclusively to one individual for exemplary contribution towards nation building.
- It will serve as an important occasion as well as a significant step towards creating awareness and building momentum for India@2047 and also building institutional, individual, institutional, cross-organizational and operational capabilities for achieving the global SDGs agenda in local context by 2030.
- The seventeen SDGs are subsumed under nine broad themes, and one or more such themes will be adopted as Sankalp by Gram Panchayats in specially convened Gram Sabhas on 24th April, 2022.
- Ministry of Panchayati Raj has requested all Gram Panchayats to organize Special Gram Sabha meetings on 24th April, 2022 across the country to mark the occasion of National Panchayati Raj Day.
- 24th April is observed by the Ministry of Panchayati Raj as National Panchayati Raj Day (NPRD) every year to celebrate the constitutional status accorded to Panchayati Ray system in the country.
- Ministry of Panchayati Raj commemorates 24th April of every year as the National Panchayati Raj Day (NPRD), as the 73rd Constitutional Amendment came into force on this date.
- 24th April, 1993 marks a defining moment in the history of decentralization of power to the grassroots, with the institutionalization of Panchayati Raj, through the Constitution (73rd Amendment) Act, 1992 which came into force with effect from that day.

Workshop on Innovative Agriculture
What's the NEWS
- NITI Aayog is organizing a day-long national workshop on ‘Innovative Agriculture' on 25 April, 2022.
- The workshop is expected to bring together stakeholders working in the field of innovative agriculture and natural-farming practices from India and abroad.
- Deliberations will be held in key areas related to the promotion of natural farming, itsrole in soil health restoration and climate change mitigation.
- Natural farming practices are mostly in harmony with the principles of agro ecology advocated by the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO).
- It offers viable solutions to improve the livelihood of farmers while reducing the environmental impact of chemical agriculture.

Global AYUSH Investment & Innovation Summit
What's the NEWS
- The first ever Global AYUSH Investment and Innovation Summit (GAIIS) at Gandhinagar concluded with the AYUSH sector witnessing Letter of Intents (LoIs) of over Rs 9,000 crores.
- The investment proposals have come across major categories like FMCG, Medical Value Travel (MVT) and services, pharmaceuticals, technology & diagnostics, and farmers & agriculture.
- Other than international exchanges, an MoU was signed between the Ministry of AYUSH and Ministry of Defence to start AYUSH facilities in over 35 cantonment areas across India.
- The market size of the AYUSH has witnessed a quantum jump from just over $3 billion in 2014 to $ 18 billion today, clocking a phenomenal annual growth of 75%.
- The Global Ayush investment and Innovation Summit, 2022 was a distinctive effort by the Government of India to attract the world's attention to India's ancient wisdom and traditional knowledge, and capitalize on it to pave the way for a sustainable future.
- The Summit was organized in line with Sustainable Development Goal Number 3 of promoting "Good Health and Well-being."
- The summit witnessed the presence of 90 eminent speakers and 100 exhibitors.
DIGITAL SERVICES ACT (DSA)
What's the NEWS
- The European Parliament and European Union (EU) Member States have reached a political agreement on the Digital Services Act (DSA).
- The Act, which is yet to become law, was proposed by the EU Commission (anti-trust) in December 2020.
- The DSA will tightly regulate the way intermediaries, especially large platforms such as Google, Facebook, and YouTube, function when it comes to moderating user content.
- The DSA is "a set of common rules on intermediaries' obligations and accountability across the single market", and ensures higher protection to all EU users, irrespective of their country.
- It will be a landmark legislation to force big Internet companies to act against disinformation and illegal and harmful content, and to "provide better protection for Internet users and their fundamental rights".
- The proposed Act will work in conjunction with the EU's Digital Markets Act (DMA), which was approved last month.
- The DSA is likely to be adopted by the EU Parliament in the next few months. Once adopted, "it will apply from fifteen months or from January 1, 2024, whichever is later".
Osman Sagar and Himayat Sagar reservoirs
What's the NEWS
- Environmentalists are criticising the Telangana government for withdrawing an over 25-year-old government order protecting the historic Osman Sagar and Himayat Sagar reservoirs in Hyderabad, which they say will destroy the fragile surrounding ecosystem.
- Osman Sagar was completed in 1921, and Himayat Sagar in 1927.
- On March 8, 1996, the government of erstwhile (undivided) Andhra Pradesh had issued ‘Government Order (GO) 111' prohibiting development or construction works in the catchment area of the Osman Sagar and Himayat Sagar lakes up to a radius of 10 km.
- The GO prohibited the setting up of industries, residential colonies, hotels, etc. which cause pollution. The aim of the restrictions was to protect the catchment area, and to keep the reservoirs pollution-free.
- The reservoirs were created by building dams on the Musi (also known as Moosa or Muchkunda) river, a major tributary of the Krishna, to protect Hyderabad from floods.

- The Khelo India University Games 2021, hosted by Jain University with unparalleled support ftom the Karnataka State Government and the Sports Authority of India will be India's biggest sporting event and first mass participative competition post the Pandemic.
- Through the Khelo India University Games 2021, the Karnataka Government is also focusing on a pressing issue - environmental sustainability.
- Everything used in the Games outside the field of play will be made of reusable material.
- About 3879 competitors from 200-plus universities will be in action across 20 different disciplines including indigenous sports like Mallakhamba and Yogasana.
