Testing & evaluation facility for Sonar Systems of Indian Navy launched by DRDO

What's the NEWS

• Defence Research & Development Organization (DRDO) launched Hull Module of Submersible Platform for Acoustic Characterization & Evaluation (SPACE) facility at Naval Physical & Oceanographic Laboratory (NPOL) Kochi
• It is a state-of-the-art testing and evaluation facility for sonar systems developed for use by the Indian navy onboard various platforms, including ships, submarines and helicopters.
• The SPACE facility is based on the concept design and requirements projected by NPOL and has been constructed by M/s L&T Shipbuilding, Chennai.
• This will be mainly utilized for evaluating Sonar systems, allowing for quick deployment and easy recovery of scientific packages such as sensors and transducers.
• The SPACE is one-of-a-kind facility in the world.
• The uniqueness of this facility lies in the specially designed submersible platform, which can be lowered up to depths of 100 meters using a series of synchronously operated winches.

Middle East Green Initiative Summit 2022

• Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and Arab Republic of Egypt hosted the Middle East Green Initiative Summit 2022 on the sidelines of COP 27
• Objective - to create infrastructure needed to reduce emissions and protect the environment.

• The first Middle East Green Initiative (MGI) Summit was hosted by HRH Mohammed bin Salman, Crown Prince and Prime Minister in Riyadh on 25 October 2021.
• It facilitated a first-of-its-kind regional dialogue on climate, with leaders in attendance from 28 countries agreeing to work together to tackle climate change.
• This year global leaders will assemble again to discuss and build on the region's first climate alliance.
• Various initiatives undertaken by the Middle East Green Initiative, relate directly to encouraging sustainable consumption practices like planting of 50 billion trees across the Middle East that lead to employment opportunities and strengthening the resilience of countries.
• In October 2021, Saudi Arabia's Ministry of Energy announced the goal of becoming the world's largest Hydrogen Producer.
• The kingdom's vast hydrocarbon resources, existing industrial capacities and business expertise makes it an attractive supplier to energy import-dependent countries.
• The Arab Republic of Egypt is developing a Green Ammonia facility to be used as bunker fuel to serve the Suez Canal Maritime traffic.
• The efforts of Egyptian Governments in establishing green fuel production in the country in the pursuit of net-zero shipping is worth appreciating.

• India has also initiated a number of coalitions such as International Solar Alliance

• The Prime Minister, Shri Narendra Modi has paid homage to noted Tamil writer Thiru Azha. Valliappa on his birth centenary.

• He is not only remembered for his outstanding writing and poetry but also for his efforts to popularise history, culture and literature among children.
• He was born in 1922 at Rayavaram in Pudukottai district .
• He was born as the son of Alagappa Chettiar and Umaiyal Achi who belonged to the urban community.
• In 1950 , he gathered many children's writers and formed an organization called the Children's Writers' Association .

Total Lunar Eclipse

• A total lunar eclipse will occur on 8 November, 2022. The eclipse is visible from all places of India at the time of Moonrise.

Know! about Lunar Eclipse

• An eclipse of the Moon (or lunar eclipse) can only occur at Full Moon - when Earth is located directly between the Sun and the Moon -, and only if the Moon passes through some portion of Earth's shadow.
• That shadow is composed of two cone-shaped components -
• The outer or penumbral shadow is a zone where the Earth blocks part but not all of the Sun's rays from reaching the Moon.
• The inner or umbral shadow is a region where the Earth blocks all direct sunlight from reaching the Moon.

Three basic types of lunar eclipses

• Penumbral Lunar Eclipse: The Moon passes through Earth's penumbral shadow. These events are of only academic interest because they are subtle and hard to observe.
• Partial Lunar Eclipse: A portion of the Moon passes through Earth's umbral shadow. These events are easy to see, even with the unaided eye.
• Total Lunar Eclipse: The entire Moon passes through Earth's umbral shadow. These events are quite striking due to the Moon's vibrant red colour during the total phase (totality).
