VIRAASAT
What's the NEWS
- The second phase of the Sari Festival "VIRAASAT"- Celebrating 75 handwoven Saris of India will begin from 3rd to 17th January 2023 at Handloom Haat, Janpath, New Delhi.
- Handloom saris drawn from some of the exotic locations of India are on display and sale at the exhibition.

108th Indian Science Congress
What's the NEWS
- Prime Minister inaugurated and witness the entire inaugural session of the 108thIndian Science Congress
- The event was hosted by Rashtrasant Tukadoji Maharaj Nagpur University (RTMNU) at its Amravati Road Campus.
- The theme of the event this year is "Science and Technology for Sustainable Development with Women Empowerment."
- The technical sessions of the 108th Indian Science Congress have been divided into 14 sections under which parallel sessions will be conducted at different venues in the university's Mahatma Jotiba Phule Educational Campus.
- Apart from these 14 sections, there will be a Women's Science Congress, a Farmers' Science Congress, a Children's Science Congress, a Tribal Meet, a section on Science and Society and a Science Communicators' Congress.
- A special attraction of the event is a mega expo "Pride of India".
- Pride of India displays the strengths and achievements of Government, Corporate, PSUs, Academic and R&D Institutes, Innovators & Entrepreneurs from all across the country.
- In the run-up to the event, the Vigyan Jyot programme, a tradition of the Indian Science Congress was held today
- Vigyan Jyot - Flame of Knowledge - was conceived on the lines of the Olympic flame.
- It is a movement dedicated to nurturing scientific temper in the society, especially the youth.
- The flame was installed at the university campus and will continue to be alight until the end of the 108th Indian Science Congress.
Lumpi-ProVac
What's the NEWS
- An MoU for production of Goat Pox vaccine and "Lumpi-ProVac" vaccine was signed
- This MoU will also ensure large-scale production of Goat Pox vaccine for future needs of India's livestock sector.
- At present Goat Pox vaccine is used for controlling Lumpy Skin Disease in animals and this has been proven effective against Lumpy.
- Lumpi-ProVacind is safe in animals and induces LSDV-specific antibody-and cell-mediated immune response, besides providing complete protection against lethal LSDV challenge.
- Lumpi-ProVacind is used for the prophylactic immunization of animals against Lumpy Skin Disease, which illicit protection for about one year.
- A single dose of the vaccine contains 103.5 TCID50 of live-attenuated LSDV (Ranchi strain).
- The vaccine is stored at 4°C. The vaccine must be shipped on ice and must be used within a few hours after reconstitution.
- The patent has been filed by the ICAR for the technology.
Know! about LSD
- The Lumpy Skin Disease has been reported in India from 2019 while first case was reported in the state of Odisha. After that, it has spread to multiple states in the country.
- In 2019, death of a large number of cattle has been reported from different states with high morbidity especially in North-West region of the country.
- The disease has been controlled and contained with the available Goatpox vaccine in the country.
Multicopter (VTOL) Drones
What's the NEWS
- In a major boost to Marine Surveillance and Interdiction capabilities, the Indian Coast Guard has concluded maiden contract for 10 multicopter (VTOL) drones in consonance with Government of India's policy of embracing Drone Technology.
- These drones are capable of being launched from both Ships whilst underway, as well as Shore Stations and will play a significant role in the reach if ICG unit during Surveillance & Security operations.
- In addition, these drones are going to assist in Search and Rescue (SAR), both by day as well as night.
- The ICG plans to induct 100 additional drones by 2025, to meet the ever-growing challenges in India's Maritime Zones and Search & Rescue Region.
Prajjwala Challenge
What's the NEWS
- With an aim to invite ideas, solutions and actions that can transform rural economy, the Deendayal Antyodaya Yojana - National Rural Livelihoods Mission (DAY-NRLM) has launched the Prajjwala Challenge.
- It is one of the platforms where ideas are invited from individuals, Social Enterprises, Start up, Private Sector, Civil Society, Community Based Organization, Academic Institution, Start-ups, Incubation centres, Investors etc having potential to transform the rural economy.
- The Mission is looking for ideas and solutions around Innovative Technology Solution, Inclusive Growth, Value Chain Interventions, Enhanced Women Entrepreneurship, Cost effective Solutions, Sustainability, place-based employment, localised models etc.
- The broad contours fall into following categories:
- Focus on Women and Marginalized section of community
- Localised Models
- Sustainability
- Cost Effective solutions
- Multi sectoral ideas and solutions etc
- Shortlisted ideas will be acknowledged by the Mission and will be provided mentorship support from an expert panel and incubation support to scale up.
- The top 5 ideas will be rewarded with Rs. 2 Lakh each.
- The Prajjwala Challenge will also be shared in the Manthan portal by the office of Principal Scientific Advisor and in the BIMTECH- Atal Innovation Mission Portal for reaching out to larger number of applicants.
Know! about DAY-NRLM
- DAY-NRLM is one of the flagship poverty alleviation programs of the Ministry of Rural Development, which aims at creating efficient and effective institutional platforms of the rural poor, enabling them to increase household income through sustainable livelihoods enhancements and improved access to financial services.
- The Mission so far has mobilised more than 87 Million women in to the Self Hep Groups and their federations.
