What's the NEWS

 

  • Exercise TSENTR 2019 is part of the annual series of large scale exercises that form part of the Russian Armed Forces' annual training cycle.

Know! all about TSENTR 2019

  • The series rotates through the four main Russian operational strategic commands. Russia holds a major military exercise every year at one of it's four military Commands i.e Vostok (East), Zapad (West), TSENTR (Centre) and Kavkas (South).
  • This year the exercise is planned between 09 September to 23 September 19 at Donguz training ranges, Orenburg, Russia.
  • These annual exercises have slowly began taking an international character, with Belarus participating in ZAPAD-2017 and China and Mongolia participating in VOSTOK-2018. This year, invitations for participation have been extended to nine other countries.
  • This year's Exercise TSENTR 2019 will be conducted by Central Military Commission of Russia. Apart from host Russia, military contingents from China, India, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Pakistan and Uzbekistan will also take part in this mega event.
  • The exercise TSENTR 2019 will comprise two modules. The first module will include counter- terror operations, repelling air strikes, reconnaissance operations and defensive measures, while the second will focus on offensive operations.

First ever Mobile Science Exhibition (SCIENCE EXPLORER)

  • The Union Minister of State for Culture and Tourism flagged off the first ever Mobile Science Exhibition (SCIENCE EXPLORER) for the entire Ladakh Region in Leh

  • Mobile Science Exhibition in Ladakh will benefit all the people of Ladakh through its mobility and knowledge.
  • Mobile Science Exhibition (MSE) programme, originally launched as Mobile Science Museum (MSM) in 1965, with a mission ‘If the people cannot visit the museum, let the museum visit the people at their doorsteps', is the largest and the longest running outreach programme of NCSM.
  • The Union Culture Minister simultaneously launched 25 new Mobile Science Exhibition buses for Aspirational Districts of India.
  • The Government of India aims to upgrade the districts which have shown relatively less progress in achieving key social outcomes through a mass movement and to fulfil this objective, NCSM, an autonomous S&T institution under the Ministry of Culture jointly with the Department of Science &Technology (DST), Government of India is launching 25 new Mobile Science Exhibition Buses specifically for these aspirational districts.
  • The buses will travel to schools in Aspirational Districts through out the year except during the vacations and will aim to create a scientific awareness among the rural children.

  • The first MSE on the theme ‘Our Familiar Electricity' was inaugurated at Ramakrishna Mission Boys' School, Narendrapur, near Kolkata on 17th November 1965.
  • The first MSE Bus was flagged off in 1966 from Birla Industrial and Technological Museum, Kolkata.
  • Mounted on a specially designed bus, a Mobile Science Exhibition carries a number of interactive exhibits related to everyday science.
  • The MSE or Museo-bus travels from school to school in rural areas and organize exhibitions there throughout the year.

Know! about NCSM

  • National Council of Science Museums (NCSM), an autonomous organization under the Ministry of Culture, Govt. of India is primarily engaged in ‘Communicating Science to Empower People' through its network of twenty-five Science Centres/Museums spread across India.
  • With the help of its unique interactive science exhibits through which students can explore the basics of science and technology, travelling and short-term exhibitions, Mobile Science Exhibitions (MSE) units and a wide range of science based educational programmes and activities for public and students in particular, NCSM has now become a trend setter in the field of science communication both at national and international level.
  • NCSM is the world's largest network of science centres and museums that functions under a single administrative umbrella.

Eat Right India Movement launched

  • "Eat Right, Stay Fit, Tabhi India Super Fit", Dr Harsh Vardhan said this as he launched the Eat Right India Movement of FSSAI, the new healthy eating approach which places citizens at the centre of a Health Revolution through food and fitness.
  • The campaign ‘Eat Right India' with its new logo and tagline ‘Sahi Bhojan. Behtar Jeevan' were released by the Health Minister on the side-lines of the 5-day ‘72nd Session of the WHO Regional Committee for South-East Asia'

Celebration of September Month as Poshan Maah

  • The month of September is being celebrated all across the country as "Poshan Maah" (Nutrition Month) to sensitize the public towards healthy eating, address the twin issues of malnutrition/undernutrition and problem of obesity in some sections of the population, and also intensifying the campaign towards a ‘Malnutrition-Free India'.
  • This movement is aligned with the Government's flagship public health programmes such as POSHAN Abhiyaan, Ayushman Bharat Yojana and Swachh Bharat Mission to lead us to the New India, which our Prime Minister wishes to deliver to all citizens by 2022.

  • Eat Right India movement is a crucial trigger for the much needed social and behavioural change.
  • This campaign along with the ‘Fit India' Movement' launched by the visionary Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi ji will help us to fight lifestyle diseases like hypertension, obesity and diabetes effectively
  • India is passing through an epidemiological shift from communicable to non-communicable diseases, and the burden of diet-related diseases such as diabetes, hypertension, and obesity is rising rapidly. The new "food systems approach" judiciously combines the regulatory and capacity building measures with consumer empowerment initiatives.

Measures taken by the Government for escalating the Eat Right movement

  • The Government has prescribed a limit for Total Polar Compounds (TPC) at 25% in cooking oil to avoid the harmful effects of reused cooking oil.
  • Standards for five fortified staples -wheat flour, rice, oil, milk and salt to reduce large-scale deficiencies of vitamins and minerals have been notified, in addition to standards for health supplements, nutraceuticals, prebiotics and probiotics products.
  • Regulations on Advertising and Claims and mandatory menu labelling has been notified.
  • In addition, labelling provisions have been made for appropriate use of sweeteners for children and pregnant women
  • The first ever state-of-the-art National Food Laboratory of Delhi, NCR and to strengthen the Eat Right Movement a network of food testing laboratories is being established in the country
  • The Eat Right campaign is a true example of multi-sectoral collaborative approach that WHO has been advocating for to address non-communicable diseases such as heart diseases, high blood pressure, diabetes, obesity, malnutrition, etc.
  • The campaign brings together people, celebrities and other influencers, food industry, public health professionals, civil society and consumer organizations.
  • It seems to address both the demand and the supply side - by making people aware of the what it means by eating right, and the benefits of it for them to make right choices.
  • On the supply side, it promotes food businesses to reformulate their products, provide better nutritional information to consumers and make investments in healthy food as responsible food businesses.

Know! about POSHAN Abhiyaan

  • POSHAN Abhiyaan is a multi-ministerial convergence mission with the vision to ensure attainment of malnutrition free India by 2022.
  • The objective of POSHAN Abhiyaan to reduce stunting in identified Districts of India with the highest malnutrition burden by improving utilization of key Anganwadi Services and improving the quality of Anganwadi Services delivery.
  • Its aim to ensure holistic development and adequate nutrition for pregnant women, mothers and children.
  • The Ministry of Women and Child Development (MWCD) is implementing POSHAN Abhiyaan in 315 Districts in first year, 235 Districts in second year and remaining districts will be covered in the third year.
  • There are a number of schemes directly/indirectly affecting the nutritional status of children (0-6 year's age) and pregnant women and lactating mothers.
  • In spite of these, level of malnutrition and related problems in the country is high. There is no dearth of schemes but lack of creating synergy and linking the schemes with each other to achieve common goal. POSHAN Abhiyaan through robust convergence mechanism and other components would strive to create the synergy.

Skill India announces Annual Kaushalacharya Awards

  • 53 Trainers felicitated for outstanding contribution, including experts of WorldSkills Competition winners, trainers from NSTI, ITI, JSS and from reputed Corporates

  • In a bid to motivate and incentivize more trainers to join the Skill India Mission, the Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship (MSDE) organized Kaushalacharya Samadar 2019 to felicitate trainers from different sectors for exceptional contribution towards creating a future-ready and skilled workforce.
  • The Ministry also announced the "Kaushalacharya Awards" would be an annual event to recognize the contribution made by skill trainers in the vocational training ecosystem.
  • By 2022 it is estimated India will need about 2.5 lakh trainers across the skilling ecosystem. NSDC and DGT are working together to create better quality trainers and assessors.
  • To ensure standardization of training and learning, MSDE is working on creating world-class academies and putting in place rigorous accreditation processes.
  • The Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship has introduced programs to for effective utilization of capacity and infrastructure across the network of National Skill Training Institutes (NSTIs) to achieve greater convergence between long-term and short-term skill ecosystem. Organisations like NIMI, NSTI, Central Staff Training and Research Institute (CSTRI) are working closely toward strengthening of trainers.

The WorldSkills Competition 2019 in Kazan, Russia

  • On the occasion, MSDE felicitated the experts/ trainers of the 19 participants who won laurels for India at the WorldSkills Competition 2019 in Kazan, Russia on Aug 22-27.
  • India won a Gold, a Silver, two bronze and 15 Medallion of Excellence at WorldSkills Competition and ranked 13th among 63 countries. Kaushalacharya Awards were also conferred on trainers from the Directorate of General Training (DGT), the nodal body for vocational training in India.
