Globalization & its impact on Democracy
Globalization and it's impact- “The cottage industries of India had to perish in order that Lancashire might flourish.” Gandhi ji was skeptical about the industrialisation and manufacturing of goods in large industrial units. According to him, the development of cottage industries was necessary to achieve universal well being and devolution of democracy to the grassrootlevel . Just as there are two sides to every coin there are two sides to every story. Same is in the case of globalization , for some it is neo imperialism and for others it is the tool to bring prosperity in the society. Britishers gave us the problems of poverty ,illetracy , unemployment . With these problems, it was not possible for us to compete with the world . The situation would have been different if globalization was introduced just after Independence. Once bitten twice shy , India was quite skeptical about the basic goals of globalization i.e free movement of goods , services, capital , technology and human resources . Globalization brought several socio-cultural, economic and political changes but the most complicated and complex was political changes that directly and indirectly related to democracy. Democracy means rule by the people. It should be qualitative , democracy is when everybody has the right to thrive for the best, it believes in political freedom and equality in society. Democracy is when even the most marganilised section and minorities think themselves as the part of the system. If India wants to make democracy meaningful and universalize it, we really need to put efforts on human development parameters like education , healthcare and average income, this can be done by creating more and more opportunities for all and inclusive development approach. As globalization has brought opportunities as well as threat.Gloablization is the integration various world economies into one , as no country in the world is self sufficient, all are dependent on others for one product or more , it has created opportunities to sellers to sell their products anywhere in the world ,and for buyers to buy from anywhere . Countries like India who exports less and imports more ,india is highly dependent on others for it's energy requirement. As a forex scarce nation globalization paves the way to get foreign capital and investment to keep it's balance of payment in check, India set up several energy plants with the help of foreign technology. We are working with several nations in defense and space programme. India produces services for other nations , Our Diaspora and our MNCs are earning around the world , so we may say globalization helps us in many ways . It helps us to raise living standard of the people by the means of education , earnings , better products , better health care all of these strengthen our democracy. It works on qualitative aspects of democracy. However on the other hand , in the name of loan , donation and enforcement of democracy we have seen capturing of small and developing nations by hegemonic powers. In the name of free trade developed nations and countries like China are dumping their products in India , Big MNCs who are far better in terms of technology and expertise than our small industries engulfed our domestic industries . MNCs with their products capture our whole market , denial of visas to our people ,we have seen big MNCs are the root causes of chronic capitalism in most of the African nations, they are virtually ruling them ,by establishing Nexus with the political powers. The strength of our culture and heritage faces the test of globalization , Let our efforts find direction to develop a global village - where prosperity and rights coexist. In the race of being a global power , We should take steps to build capacity of our country to overcome internal challenges and resisit global pressure. We should do a SWOT analysis of ourselves and work according to our findings.
