Globalization & its impact on Democracy

Globalization & it's impact on democracy Mr. Vijay Krishnan from India was working as an Engineer from few decades in one of the countries in ‘the Middle East’. In the year 2010, he had witnessed a peculiar event occurred in the country, which they it called “Arab Spring” later. He had seen people using Social media as a platform for their freedom of speech and Space for civic engagement. Later turned into violent and dreadful in some regions. This majorly was the impact of GLOBALIZATION. It which showed them the democratic rule across various countries through social media and made them call for Democratic Rule in their countries.Today essay is about Globalization & its impact on Democracy. According to WHO, globalization can be defined as “the increased interconnectedness and interdependence of peoples and countries. For example, from the opening of international borders to increasingly fast flows of goods, services, people and ideas. In the late 1800’s the actual concept of Globalization was created. Similarly, briefly about the concept of democracy. Democracy means “rule of the people”. Scholars say that “Democracy is a cornerstone good society as well as human dignity “ POSITIVE IMPACTS: 1) The principles of globalization helped to promote the spread of democracy. For Example,This is an issue, that is central to western political agendas and of the Arab Spring. The demand for greater democratic representation for their people. 2) DECENTRALIZATION : Globalization encourages the authoritarian states to decentralize its power.3) CHECK TO POWER ABUSE:Democracy is progressively becoming the only alternative to autocratic regimes.4)INTERNATIONAL PARTICIPATION:Growing influence of international organizations.Eg: such as the United Nations and WHO and others.Impact on Economy: Globalization had helped exposure to world of education and trained citizens. Thus decrease in economic inequality.Impact on Cultural: The books, poems, and stories are now instantaneously available all around the world. NEGATIVE IMPACTS :1) One may say that globalization posed threat to democracy as many believed that it undermines the state autonomy, thus decline of the nation state. How ? 1) The governments no longer have control over their economy and their borders.2) Less control of their markets, exchange rates.3) Increase in wealth, can also increase the socio-economic disparity between people.4) Government designing their policies to please global investors. Thus the level of democracy declines in all above cases. There are also negative impacts on several aspects of finances, investments, cultural, Environmental, etc. This loss can contribute to weakening of democracy. To sum up, In the conclusion is clear that Globalization undirected and unchecked, it can cause immense damage. What we need is a new kind of globalization an inclusive and sustainable globalization, that has equity and fairness as core values and we must take urgent measures to ensure it.Firstly, our focus must be on People-centric modelEg: Structural policies, strategic investments in education, skill, innovation and physical infrastructure.Secondly, we need to make a better model for trade useful for all and balance protectionism. Building more inclusive global value chains is useful. Finally, the democracy we achieve in this globalized world must help in empowering everyone, that is inclusive of all.In the words of Mr. Kofi Annan, former Secretary-general-UNO “If globalization is to succeed, it must succeed for poor and rich alike. It must deliver rights no less than riches. It must provide social justice and equity to all “ DECLARATION :THIS IS THE ORIGINAL CONTENT OF THE AUTHOR & NOT COPIED FROM ANYWHERE.
