Abstract
Our India is consistently progressing in various sectors such as trade, commerce, politics, economy, infrastructure, science & technology and so on. Globalization plays a vital role to achieve sustainable development goals. In this essay, let’s see about the impact of globalization on democracy.
Introduction
“Globalization is a fact, because of technology, because of an integrated global supply chain, because of changes in transportation. And we are not going to be able to build a wall around that”.
-Barack Obama
The interdependence of world’s economy, trade, culture and politics is termed as globalization. Both developed and developing countries will be benefited by improved standard of technology, markets and outsourcing jobs.
Globalization in primeval time
The concept of “proto-globalization” was first introduced by historians by A.G.Hopkins and Christopher Bayly. Globalization began in the late 15th century. It starts with migrants and merchants who shared their ideas and customs to other lands. Ancient civilization, European age of exploration(1400s-1800s), Age of imperialism(1870-1914), Post world war 2 global cooperation(1945-1980) and modern globalization( from 1980s) were the five stages of globalization
Contemporary globalization and its impact on democracy
Globalization results in both colonialism and liberalism. We have both positive and negative impacts on democracy.
Positive impacts
Globalization supports political democracy which results in improved economic and social democracy.
It makes people more united to share business ideas, culture and social values which improves financial democracy of a country.
World citizens will get democratic access. They can study or work in other countries.
Increased employment opportunities will develop liberty of nations.
Border disputes can be solved by global tranquility.
Cultural values should not be forgotten as it will create a greater impact on democracy. Chinese e-commerce giant Alibaba in 2018 announced that it had chosen city of Xi’an as its new regional headquarters and told that it had brought globalization to its ancient birthplace.
Developed countries will support developing countries politically and socially which will result in effective democracy where common people will also be benefited.
Negative impacts
It affects democratic rights of students as education sector is privatized.
If multinational companies moves its storage and shipping to the other countries, then the employees and the country will not be benefited.
Hyper globalization may result in pretermitted social and cultural values of one’s own country.
Developed countries may play a dominant role.
The race will be between developed and developing countries. Other countries will stay out of the race.
It may result in terrorism, currency fluctuations and job insecurities. The rights of citizens will not reach common people.
Future of globalization
The integration of different people and different countries will enhance the future of globalization. India and some other countries should not be import-dependent. Global access should not affect the fundamental rights of Indian citizens. Common people should have access to higher education. Money should not play a prominent role. Sharing of political and social values should not affect our Indian constitution negatively.
Conclusion
“We must create a kind of globalization that works for everyone…and not just for a few”
Globalization will solve social and economic disparities. Even though we have negative impacts, the positive side of globalization is greater. This will develop good neighbourhood relations and will create a chance for all countries to attain sustainable goals in all fields which will make every nation as a developed nation.
