Updated on 11th May 2023, 10:31 am
If you’ve started preparing for CAT, you’re already aware that the Data Interpretation & Logical Reasoning (DILR) section is considered to be the toughest section of CAT. This is the case as DILR is an unfamiliar terrain that most aspirants have never prepared for or attempted before in school or college. However, according to our CAT experts, the section is easy to excel in with the right strategy and preparation. So here are the top tips to follow when preparing to ace the DILR section:
- Practise DILR questions daily
The only way to learn about the different types of questions and prepare for the section is by practicing questions. The key to acing this section is majorly focused on familiarizing with the concepts and questions.
So, ensure that you give half an hour to an hour on a daily basis towards preparing for DILR. Initially, you will be able to attempt 1-2 sets in an hour but the goal is to attempt 3-4 sets with accuracy within an hour.
- Identify the sets you will attempt
With enough practise, you will be able to intuitively tell if a set is too difficult or time-consuming. The skill to be developed is the ability to review a question and identify whether or not it is easy to attempt.
You will reach this level if you maintain your daily schedule and attempt questions regularly. When you do reach a set or question you struggle with, find out how to attempt it, solve it, and revise similar questions.
- Understand the concepts
Finally, when going over the questions, don’t just take in the data provided but also read between the lines for data you can derive based on the questions and answers given. These points will help you reach the answers quicker. So, ensure that you do not read the sets and questions only at face value but also draw statements that have been provided indirectly.
The ability to ace this section thus lies on these three pillars. If you polish your ability to derive statements, be intuitive, and practise enough to familiarize yourself with most types of questions you will be able to score well in this section.
